Traditional Otani Pottery |
|
 |
The Otani style of pottery began in 1780 when Bun'emon, a master potter from the island of Kyushu, came to the area and worked with red clay from the village of Otani. Noted for the excellence of the clay and simplicity of design, Otani ceramics are fired in a large, climbing kiln taller than most people, regarded as the finest in Japan. In addition to the traditional large containers, Otani potters now create a variety of folkcraft-style pieces as well as original works of art.
